Ontario government outlaws school staff strike but unions vow job action will go ahead

The Doug Ford government passed legislation Thursday that invoked the Canadian Charter’s notwithstanding clause to outlaw a strike by 55,000 CUPE education workers after last-ditch talks failed. The Toronto District School Board (TDSB) sent a memo out to parents advising them that schools will be closed starting Friday for the duration of strike action and children will be sent home with work to complete independently. Education Minister Stephen Lecce said his government went ahead with Bill 28, the Keeping Students in Class Act, because it was not prepared to see students subjected to more disruption in their schooling after two years of pandemic.
