FUREY: Coronavirus reminds us why public health officials need to keep away from the political
Back in 2012, the chief medical officer of health for Ottawa voiced his support for some form of pop ban similar to what was being implemented in Manhattan at the time. On Wednesday, Toronto Mayor John Tory convened a press conference to discuss one specific angle of the troubling illness that is gaining steam in China but seems relatively stable and muted in Canada. The subject of the press event though wasn’t updating residents on the numbers or offering insights on Canada’s response. It was to hector Torontonians and the broader region to not lash out at Chinese-Canadian people with racism and hatred. WARMINGTON: Mayor wrongly chastises residents over reaction to coronavirus LILLEY: WHO declares emergency, Canada remains under control WARMINGTON: Infectious disease specialist says 'we're prepared' for coronavirus We don’t know. Because when my colleague Joe Warmington asked both Tory and another city councillor to give an example, they ignored the question. It’s reckless and incendiary to spread such a rumour about your own city. Then again, Tory is a politician and he no doubt felt there was some strategy behind pre-emptively denouncing a city for something it hasn’t yet done. (And, let’s be crystal clear, if such things do happen, let’s all unite in rejecting it.) What makes matters more confusing is that Canada appears offside from the efforts of a number of other like-minded countries. The United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Italy have all announced more aggressive flight restrictions and quarantines for those returning from China and, specifically, Wuhan.

FUREY: School board labels coronavirus concerns 'racism' and 'hate'
Should we encourage people who arrive in Canada from the Hubei province to self-isolate for two weeks? Should you work from home if you recently visited China? What about using the face masks that some are now wearing in the streets of Toronto-area cities?

FUREY: Big tent conservatism has always included so-cons – is that changing?
I’ve been a vocal supporter of same-sex marriage since back when Liberals like Ralph Goodale were voting against it and I had many a hearty debate back in the day with those who obstinately objected to extending this liberty for all. But somehow I can’t bring myself to get worked up about recent comments made by Richard Décarie, someone most of us had never heard of before until he made the controversial remarks that now have everyone talking.

FUREY: Canada’s new China committee is exactly what's needed
It’s time to revise the old saying about how all roads lead to Rome. Because if you take a survey of all the big news stories out there, you’ll see that there’s another country that’s become the common thread in so much of what Canada’s dealing with right now, and that country is China.

FUREY: The Iran protests – it’s about being on the right side of history
We are on the cusp of something truly historic happening in Iran. People are taking to the streets in great number to call for the end of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s regime, to call for liberty and freedom and a better future. They are also calling for allies, for people in the free world, to stand with them and amplify their voices.

FUREY: Canadians’ eyes are now opened wide to Iran’s wretchedness
It’s not just the plane crash that should make us angry. Or the fact Iran first shamelessly lied and tried to cover up the truth. It’s the entire track record of this whole wretched regime in Tehran that deserves our condemnation.

FUREY: Iran is withholding the black box - as Canadians we can't tolerate that
What a difference 24 hours can make. When Canadians woke up Tuesday they would have found that one of the top political talkers was what to make of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new facial hair.
