ODDS ON: Randall the Handle's NFL betting tips for Week 4

— Totals have become a hot topic in the NFL. Scoring is up and oddsmakers had not responded accordingly. That was until this week. Week 4 finds eight games listed with a total in the 50s. That’s the most games at 50 or more in a single week in NFL history. Overs have been hitting at a 63.8% rate this season (30-17), a remarkable imbalance by football betting standards. There are various factors contributing to this output. Perhaps most notably are the empty stadiums. No longer are visiting team quarterbacks being drowned out by crowd noise. This allows them to bellow out varied instructions at the line of scrimmage without any hindrances. That a huge advantage for pro throwers. Also, fourth-down attempts are way up. While not all are successful, many are and drives get extended. When unsuccessful, the opposing team is often left with a short field in which to score.

FANTASY FARE: Updated NHL trade deadline fallout

Plenty happened on the trade front between last Saturday and the Monday deadline, some of which may even have a late-season impact on hockey pools. Our Saturday noon cutoff time for this column means we can assess the trade fallout with the advantage of having seen, for a game or two, where the acquired players initially fit in with their new teams. Of course, not all of these first looks are going to stick. Chemistry, production and injuries will all help decide who ultimately plays with whom.

FANTASY FARE: Rough week for injuries, especially on defence

When our office head-to-head league flipped to the next game last Monday, I was quietly fist-pumping the fact that my opponent this week had lost Connor McDavid to a quad injury a couple of days earlier. But with the fantasy gods forever lurking, I should’ve known better than to even think I’d have an advantage. One night later, my No. 2 overall pick — Nikita Kucherov (McDavid was first) — left his game at Pittsburgh in the second period with a lower-body injury following what appeared to be a mild bump along the boards behind the net. McDavid was challenging teammate Leon Draisaitl for the NHL scoring lead before being hurt while Kucherov has had the most points of anyone the past month to rejoin the top 10. That is not the kind of production you replace off the waiver wire. Oh, and just for punitive measures, I then lost Kucherov’s teammate Anthony Cirelli (12 points in his past 13 games), also to an LBI in the same second period.
