RANDALL'S RANT: Why did Chiefs field that punt?

There is  often  one  pivotal  play in NFL  games  that  ultimately   decides  a  win  or a loss and more  significantly  to  gamblers , a cover or non-cover. For those that had the Saints +3 (the 32-29 Kansas City  win   ended  in a push for most) the play that is  still  replaying in their  minds   involved  a  punt   at the end of  the first half of New Orleans’s  game  against the champion Chiefs. With the score 14-7 for KC and just 16 seconds  remaining  until  halftime , the Saints were punting. In his wisdom, Chiefs punt-returner Demarcus Robinson  opted  to field the ball inside of his own 15-yard line  rather than  let it  bounce  to  wherever  and  allow  his  team  to head to the locker room with a  satisfactory  seven-point lead.  Based on  this  decision , it is safe to  assume  that Robinson flunked  punt  returner school. Why touch the ball? What good can come of it?  In fact , why does Andy Reid have  anyone  back there  at all ?  Many   bad  things can  occur  and sure enough, it did.  A slew of  Saints’  players   descended  upon their  target  and one was  able to   strike  the ball  loose . The pigskin took a  perfect  bounce into the end zone and just  one of  the five or six black  shirts  of New Orleans could  fall on  the ball,  resulting in  touchdown and a morale-boosting 14-14  tie  at the  intermission .  Instead , the  flock  of  players   looked like  a  bunch  of 5-year olds  chasing  after a  soccer  ball as the  football   escaped  the scrum and  ended up  going through the back of the end zone for a  safety . The five-point  difference  between a safety and a touchdown is  enormous . The  physical  miscue of the Saints was  disappointing . The  mental   breakdown  of Robinson’s  decision  to field the ball is  inexcusable . That fiasco was by two of the top  teams  in the  league . Makes you wonder  sometimes .

RANDALL'S RANT: Bad misses from Vikings kicker like a punch in the face

Most bettors have  experienced  a  bad  beat. That  term   originates  from poker where a player with a  strong   hand  gets  beat  on the river card against  strong  odds. Translated into sports  betting  and  the same   principle  applies whereas a last-second or  bizarre  play  changes  the  outcome . When it  happens , it  hurts . It is  often  the  cause  of that  scream  you  hear  from the den. It is much like an  unexpected   punch  in the  face . It is  really   painful  when first  struck  and then the  pain  dissipates. What might be worse than a  bad  beat is a slow beat. Just ask Minnesota Vikings’  backers  after  watching  their  money  go poof in Sunday’s  game  against Tampa Bay. The Vikes were 7-point  underdogs  in this one. When Minnesota opened the scoring with a touchdown, Minnesota bettors were feeling  optimistic . Then Dan Bailey came on to kick the extra point and he  promptly  missed it. For whatever  reason , when that  happens , it  commonly   puts   bad  karma on the  team  the  rest  of the  way . In this  case , it was an  all-out  curse. Bailey would go on to  miss  three field  goals  in three  attempts  after that. A  guy  that  gets  three million dollars per season to kick a ball accurately  a few   times  in a  game  wasn’t even  close . For those keeping score, Bailey has now  missed  seven kicks in his  previous  nine  attempts  in Minnesota’s  previous  two  games . In Sunday’s matchup, leaving those 10  points  on the field was  bad  enough but it also  adds  a demoralizing  effect  to the  team  as a whole. It was 6-0. Minnesota field goal try.  Wide  right. Skip  ahead , 7-6 for Tampa. Another Bailey field goal try.  Wide  right again. Skip, skip. Now trailing 23-14  at the end of  the third quarter, the Vikes will be covered with a successful field goal. Out trots the villainous placekicker.  Wide  right once again.

RANDALL'S RANT: Saints-Broncos game was punishment for football fans

There are consequences to breaking rules . The Broncos learned that first hand. However , just like in the film Full Metal Jacket when Private Leonard ‘Gomer Pyle’ Lawrence hid a jelly doughnut in his barracks and his fellow military recruits were handed a punishment because of it, it was the football public that suffered most from the league’s decision to allow this game to be played. Denver’s quarterbacks were not compliant with league protocols and as a result , the team was forced to start a practice squad rookie receiver who hadn’t played the position since 2017 at Wake Forest University. Needless to say, it was a disaster and a travesty . One had to feel for young Kendall Hinton after he was placed in an impossible and overwhelming situation . Hinton completed one of nine passes for 13 yards and tossed two interceptions on the afternoon as his team was walloped 31-3 to visiting New Orleans. Saints bettors were pleased , even though they had to spot their guests 17½ points (third-most in league history for a road team ), signifying how ridiculous this was. Oddly , New Orleans quarterback Taysom Hill wasn’t much better as he was 9 of 16 for 78 yards passing with no touchdowns and one interception. Two teams with two position players playing quarterback for billion-dollar entities. Shame , shame . Then again , the Ravens and Patriots play each week with a running back lining up under center.
