EDITORIAL: New GG shows bilingualism not always needed

One of several positives we can take from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s selection of Mary Simon as Canada’s first Indigenous Governor-General is his tacit admission that Canadians don’t have to be bilingual to hold senior positions in government. Simon is fluent in the Inuit language of Inuktitut and of course English. But she doesn’t speak French, which is normally considered an automatic disqualification for high office in Canada, particularly by Trudeau and the Liberals. If nothing else, of course, the PM and his followers are masters of changing their positions and their principles when they feel it will be politically advantageous for them to do so.
