REVIEW: Something ‘Wick’-ish this way comes in 'Ballerina'

You probably already know where you stand on the John Wick action movies. Either you think they’re dazzling displays of state-of-the-art fight choreography and darkly detailed world-building or they’re deplorable wallows in gun fetishism and ultraviolence – the apex of R-rated commercial entertainment or the nadir of a culture that’s been numbed by video game carnage and can only cheer on the cleverness of the kill.

Karate Kid: Legends  steps, with a light and sprightly gait, into the timeline of the 41-year-old movie and TV franchise, opening with a brief and un-belabored prologue, courtesy of artificial intelligence. That intro calls on Mr. Miyagi, the beloved character played by the late Pat Morita, to kick a small chronological incongruity out of the way by resuscitating the actor a la the final season of the spin-off series Cobra Kai .

Hey, hey: If you’ve perused Netflix at all in the past week, chances are you’ve encountered the new dark comedy “Sirens,” starring Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy and Milly Alcock as a trio of women locked in a battle of power and status on the fictional New England island of Port Haven. The streaming platform reported that the five-episode series debuted at No. 1 over Memorial Day weekend, which would explain all the buzz and fan theories floating around the internet. The other reason is a plot salad whose ingredients include: photographic blackmail, suspected cult activity, gruesome bird death and people falling off cliffs (both in real life and in their dreams).
