The spa treatment includes cold plunges – either going into cold tubs, or being washed in buckets of freezing water – before going to either a sauna, hot tub, or fire pit to rejuvenate. Then repeat.
The cycle, known as thermotherapy, is a popular treatment in Scandinavian countries – thus its name – and claims to rejuvenate, strengthen the immune system and help soothe aches and pains.
Creekside RNR, a glamping resort in the forests of Cocagne, 36 kilometres north of Moncton, has been operating a Nordic spa since 2022.
Founder Angele Miller said the resort expanded it operations last year after seeing a spike in popularity, and now has bigger saunas, more cold tubs and hot tubs, and other relaxation areas.
“I think people are really taking self care to a whole other level … with the stress and the busy lives and everything we’re going through today, people are finding it resourceful,” Miller said. “It helps to keep you grounded, and really relaxed, and take time to breathe and take time for yourself.”

Jenn Allaert, owner of Nattuary Nordic Spa Retreat in Garner Creek near St. Martins and a massage therapist by trade, has been running her operation for four years. She said in 2024, her spot was booked for 160 nights, and is expecting more traffic this year.
“Now that the word is out and people do know that we are located here, then that kind of generates a little bit more foot traffic,” she said.
Eric Coffin added a Nordic spa experience last year when he took over Water’s Edge Glamping at Lake George, west of Fredericton.
He’s wanted to open one for a while now and said he’s excited the scene is gaining traction in the province.
“We knew it was a positive thing and it might draw people in, so we’ve been doing that, and we’ve been continuing to have every night booked,” said Coffin.
