A friend of Rodgers confirms to PEOPLE that the NFL MVP, 38, and the actress, 30, have split, just over one year after he made the surprise announcement that they were engaged.

“It was an amicable split; it just wasn’t working,” the source says. “They’re very different people with busy careers and there were obstacles that they couldn’t surmount. They will remain friendly; there’s no bad blood and no drama. It just didn’t work out for them.”

“While Shailene is supportive of Aaron’s career, he put football first and they were barely spending any time together,”  an insider tells In Touch. “She felt he neglected their relationship. Neither of them was happy.”

Rodgers announced their engagement in February 2021, while accepting his NFL Most Valuable Player award.

Speaking during the NFL Honors broadcast, Rodgers said, “2020 was definitely a crazy year filled with lots of change, growth, some amazing, memorable moments, 180 straight days of having my nose hair scraped, playing for very little fans or no stands the entire season. I got engaged and I played some of the best football in my career.”

Woodley confirmed the news during an appearance on The Tonight Show.

“I never thought I’d be engaged with somebody who threw balls for a living. I never thought as a little girl, ‘Yeah, when I grow up, I’m gonna marry someone who throws balls! Yeah!’ But he’s really just so good at it,” she told Jimmy Fallon.

News of their split comes after Rodgers courted controversy during the most recent NFL season after he tested positive for the coronavirus. The quarterback had previously claimed he was “immunized” against the virus, but following the news of his COVID positive diagnosis, he appeared on The Pat McAfee Show and confirmed he did not take any of the three vaccines available, claiming to be allergic to the MRNA vaccines made by Pfizer and Moderna, and citing blood clot concerns surrounding the Johnson & Johnson jab.

“I realize I’m in the crosshairs of the woke mob right now,” Rodgers said. “So before my final nail gets put in my cancel culture casket, I would like to set the record straight on so many of the blatant lies that are out there about myself. I tested for COVID over 300 times before testing for possible positive and I probably got it from a vaccinated player.”

Earlier this year, as rumours of a rift between the couple began to swirl, a source told PEOPLE the pair oftentimes “agree to disagree.”

“They are not talking about their politics, and they never really have.”
