Springfield, the Australian-American musician who hit it big globally with Jessie’s Girl in 1981, recently sat down with Maher for the comedian’s Club Random podcast, which was shared online Monday.

Springfield, 75, spoke about being a grandfather after one of his son’s became a father to a baby girl recently.

“I am really falling behind in this reproductive competition,” the childless Maher said.

“I don’t know, we don’t need more,” Springfield replied. “We don’t need more.”

Maher pointed out that there are some who actually say the world — currently at more than eight billion people — needs more children.

“I think that, and yet there’s a big movement out there,” Maher said. “Elon Musk, many other people talk about, ‘We have to have more babies.’ This is like a thing.”

Musk, the tech mogul who is the richest man on the planet, has at least 14 children and is reportedly recruiting women to have more kids with him.

Springfield dismissed that idea, saying everyone else will take care of that.

“But I think they’re wrong,” Maher said. “I think we already have too many.”

The rocker agreed.

“I think we have way too many,” he said. “The earth cannot support what it has now.”

Maher was in agreement but said critics would argue that there is actually room for additional children.

“And their argument is stupid,” Maher said. “Their argument is there’s plenty of room. Yeah, there’s plenty of room. There’s not plenty of resources. If we can fit them here, we just can’t feed them and take care of all their s—.”

Data released last month by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention indicate the U.S. birth rate dropped to an all-time low last year as fewer than 1.6 children are being born per woman.

For nearly two decades, the U.S. fertility rate has seen regular decreases from 2.1 children as women chose to either wait to have offspring when they are financially more stable or do not want kids at all.
