Dwayne Johnson’s “Let’s Go Leafs” chant at last week’s season opener for the Toronto Maple Leafs almost included an F-bomb, the wrestler-turned-actor revealed in a social media post.
Johnson was in town for the Canadian premiere of his upcoming DC superhero epic Black Adam and after he greeted fans at The Rec Room, The Rock whizzed down to Scotiabank Arena where he revved up the sold-out crowd with a new spin on the team’s “Go Leafs Go” chant.

As he emerged to thunderous applause, Johnson bellowed “What’s up Toronto? We’re gonna do this right” to a roaring crowd. He then broke into a “Let’s go Leafs” chant, flipping the script on the usual “Go Leafs Go” chorus that echoes throughout every home game.
“I asked (head) coach (Sheldon Keefe) before I went out into the arena if I can chant ‘Let’s Go Leafs’ and he said, ‘You can chant whatever you want and we’ll chant it too. We just wanna win,'” On social media, fans theorized that the new battle cry could help the Buds exorcise their playoff demons. “I just heard The Rock say, ‘Let’s Go Leafs.’ Folks, that means it’s the Cup year,” one person wrote, with another adding, “A crowd that grew up on ‘Go Leafs Go’ all unanimously were like, ‘Well, if Dwayne The Rock Johnson says it’s Let’s Go Leafs now, that’s what it is.” Another supporter noted the team’s 2-0 home record since the new slogan. “The Leafs are undefeated ever since the Rock chanted ‘Let’s Go Leafs’ instead of ‘Go Leafs Go.’ Coincidence? I think not.” “Maybe he was trying to end the curse so his method was changing the chant up,” another fan guessed. “It’s worth a try,” a fifth added hopefully. After the game, Leafs forward Auston Matthews said Johnson’s mid-game appearance came as a surprise to players. “It was a TV timeout, kind of minding my own business and I look up and The Rock comes flying out of nowhere,” Matthews said. “He got the building going pretty good. It’s pretty cool to see a guy like that come by and obviously get the crowd going. It was pretty sweet.” Meanwhile, several other fans were quick to note how “time changes a man” after old clips of Johnson declaring the Leafs “suck” started making the rounds. Still, Johnson was effusive in his praise for Hogtown, sharing a follow-up tweet in which he thanked the Leafs and the city. “Thank you Toronto for the passion, energy & mana,” he tweeted. “Love U back.” Black Adam opens in theatres this Friday.
