The report, obtained by CNN, indicates that Renner’s Pistenbully snow groomer “started sliding sideways” when he attempted to pull his nephew’s stuck truck out of snow.
“The Pistenbully snow groomer began sliding causing Renner to exit the vehicle without setting the emergency brake,” reads the conclusion of the report, which CNN obtained Tuesday through a public records request.
“Once he was off the PistenBully, he realized it was heading directly toward (his nephew),” the report reads. “He feared the PistenBully was going to hit (his nephew), so he decided to attempt to stop or divert the PistenBully.”
Renner was “completely crushed under a large snowcat” when he was dragged under the PistenBully and had “extreme (difficulty) breathing,” with “the right side of his chest … collapsed (and his) upper torso crushed,” according to a 911 log.

Although it was found that the Pistenbully had some mechanical issues, investigators determined that the parking brake would have kept the vehicle from moving forward.
“When Renner attempted to stop or divert the Pistenbully to avoid injury to (his nephew), he was pulled under the vehicle by the track and run over.”
The report also found that the brake light indicator was not working and “mechanical issues may have been a factor in this accident.”
“The Pistenbully rolled over him and continued down the road,” the report concludes. “He laid on the ground and focused on his breathing while (his nephew and others) rendered aid to him until medical personnel arrived on scene.”
Renner, who plays superhero archer Hawkeye in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, revealed he broke more than 30 bones in the accident in a social media post on Sunday.
“These 30 plus broken bones will mend, grow stronger, just like the love and bond with family and friends deepens,” he wrote.

He also said “morning workouts, resolutions all changed this particular new years …. Spawned from tragedy for my entire family, and quickly focused into uniting actionable love.”
Last week, in a response to a Twitter post about his Paramount+ series Mayor of Kingstown, Renner said that “Outside my brain fog in recovery, I was very excited to watch episode 201 with my family at home.”
