Rosie O’Donnell apologizes to Irish PM for ‘surreal’ Trump dig

Rosie O’Donnell has apologized to Irish Prime Minister Micheal Martin after he was asked about her decision to move to Ireland following Donald Trump’s presidential win.
Earlier this month, O’Donnell, 63, announced in a viral TikTok video that she had left the United States following Trump’s return to power.
“I just felt like we needed to take care of ourselves and make some hard decisions and follow through and now, as we’re getting settled, I was ready to post this and tell everybody what’s going on,” O’Donnell told her 2.5 million followers on the social media platform.
When the Irish leader stopped by Washington for meetings with Trump just days later, Real America’s Voice correspondent Brian Glenn asked him about O’Donnell’s decision to move to his country.
“Ireland is known for very happy, fun-loving people,” Glenn said. “Why in the world would you let Rosie O’Donnell move to Ireland? I think she is going to lower your happiness.”
Before Martin — who looked confused and didn’t seem to know who O’Donnell was — could answer, Trump jumped in with a dig at the actress and comedienne, who he has been feuding with for nearly 20 years.
“That’s true, I like that question. Do you know you have Rosie O’Donnell? Do you know who she is? You’re better off not knowing,” Trump said in a video shared by journalist Nick Sortor.
Appearing on RTE’s Late Late Show on Friday night, O’Donnell responded to the clip, calling it “very, very surreal” as she issued a lengthy apology to Martin.
“He’s been doing it for two decades and I’m still not used to it … I felt very troubled that they put the taoiseach (Irish prime minister) in that position, and didn’t treat him with the respect that a leader of that kind deserves when he’s visiting the White House,” the A League of Their Own star said. “I wrote the taoiseach with a little note apology to his email and got a note back that they had received it and thanked me. But I just wanted him to know the history and what happened and why (Trump) seems to be out to get me in ways that are startling to most.”
O’Donnell also opened up about how her nearly 20-year feud with Trump started in the first place.
“The president of the United States has it out for me, and has for 20 years, when I told the truth about him on a program called The View where it was my job to talk about pop culture and politics, and I mentioned his bankruptcies and I mentioned all of the sexual assault charges and I mentioned that he was not, in fact, the businessman that everyone thinks he is because of the show, The Apprentice, where they sold a bunch of lies to America for over 10 years, and half of America believed it,” she said. “And so he was very angry, to say the least, and he hasn’t let it go. And he sort of uses me as a punchline whenever he feels the need.”
At the time, Trump responded to her criticisms by calling O’Donnell “a real loser” and “a woman out of control.”
As the two exchanged barbs in the ensuing years, O’Donnell claimed the war-of-words led to “the most bullying I ever experienced in my life.”
Elsewhere in her interview with RTE’s Late Late Show, O’Donnell questioned Trump’s close relationship with Tesla and X owner Elon Musk, who he has tasked with leading up the Department of Government Efficiency.
“I question why for the first time in American history, a president has won every swing state and (one of his) best friends and his largest donor was a man who owns and runs the internet,” O’Donnell said. “So, I would hope that would be investigated and that we would see whether or not it was an anomaly or something else that happened on election night in America when Kamala Harris was filling up stadiums with people who supported her and Donald Trump was not able to do that. So, it’s curious to me, and as an American and a believer in democracy, I would hope that we would be able to look at all of the reasons why this happened in our country.”
O’Donnell said Americans have been left “shocked” by Trump’s return to power.
”I don’t really understand how people could support a convicted felon,” she continued. “A man who has had so many charges against him and has the moral compass of a teenage boy. It’s heartbreaking to most of the people in America and they’re slowly waking (up) to realize the cuts that he is making aren’t just going to hurt the left wing liberals that are ‘woke’ that they’re afraid of and despise. Jane Fonda said recently, ‘Being woke means you care about other people.’ That’s all that means.”
