Simu Liu trolls 'Shang-Chi' critics with old model shot

Marvel’s newest face has a way of dealing with Internet trolls.

After some people cast doubts as to whether audiences would get behind an Asian headlining a superhero movie, the studio’s latest star Simu Liu used a photo from his stock image modelling days to herald the success of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

The latest entry in Marvel’s ongoing cinematic universe opened last week and took in $90 million in its first four days of release, setting a new high watermark for the holiday weekend.

The Toronto-raised Liu also took aim at critics on his Instagram Story LOL-ing at screenshots of YouTube videos predicting the movie would fail.

Helmed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi is one of Marvel’s first new movies to follow Avengers: Endgame and centres on a martial artist who is drawn into battle with the mysterious Ten Rings organization.

Liu’s days as a stock image model has received new life thanks to the success of Shang-Chi, but the actor has previously spoken about the work.

“I did ONE stock photo shoot for 100 bucks cash in 2014… and I have ended up on HUNDREDS of ads and storefronts and pamphlets and textbook covers,” Liu wrote on an Instagram Story. “Moral of the story: Think twice before doing a stock photo shoot because they own the photos FOREVER.”

He also noticed himself on the cover for a 2015 QuickBooks accounting manual in 2017.

“Call @Alanis Morissette because I just died from irony. I did a stock photo shoot in 2014 and it ended up here. I used to be an accountant,” the Kim’s Convenience star tweeted in 2017.
