Tennis fans were miffed after video of Hugh Grant sleeping at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships went viral.
Grant, 64, was in attendance at Wednesday’s men’s singles quarter-final tennis match between Novak Djokovic and Flavio Cobolli when he was caught dozing off mid-game as he sat beside his wife, Anna Elisabet Eberstein.
The 64-year-old actor was not only in one of the most choice spots on Centre Court; he was seated right behind Queen Camilla in the Royal Box.
With images of a sleeping Grant racking up millions of views on social media, people at home vented that the Notting Hill star couldn’t keep his eyes open during one of the tournament’s most thrilling matches, which seven-time Wimbledon champion Djokovic won 6-7 (6), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 to set up a semifinal against No. 1 Jannik Sinner.
“People have been queuing since 3 a.m. to get into Wimbledon to have a chance of being able to be at this match or even to watch it on the big screen in the grounds. And Hugh Grant slept through the tie break. Frankly, I think it is rude,” one critic fumed on X.
“I would give my eyes teeth to have his seat and Grant bloody snoozes,” another added.
“How can anyone fall asleep during a tennis match when Novak Djokovic is playing?” a third person questioned.
But some fans defended Grant, saying he might have just had a big lunch, while others said he might have been tired after running around looking after his five children that he shares with Eberstein and his ex, actress Tinglan Hong.
“He’s got about 15 children under 10 and he’s in his 60s. I’m exaggerating. But at his age a young family would make me nap often!,” one person wrote.
“Tennis is an excellent sport to fall asleep to. Surprisingly soothing. The soft squeak and shuffle of tennis shoes on the court. The hollow pop of the ball meeting the strings. The quiet announcers and crowd,” another Grant defender added. “The sounds are never jarring, they’re organic and fluid.”
“You know what? I’m 23 years younger than him and don’t have kids, and I nearly fell asleep yesterday in front of the tennis,” a third person added. “And watching tennis is one of my favourite things to do! The weather has just been so heavy and humid, making it tough to sleep at night, and the man was wearing a full suit, for goodness sake! I don’t know how he does it, frankly.”
Grant is just one of the many celebrities who have been in attendance at the All England Club over the past two weeks.
Jodie Foster, David Beckham, Olivia Rodrigo, Russell Crowe, Dave Grohl, and new couple Andrew Garfield and Monica Barbaro have all been spotted in the crowd.
