Toronto actor Paul Soles, who voiced Peter Parker in television’s original Spider-Man animated series and Hermey the elf in Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, has died at the age of 90.
His sister, Ruth-Ellen Soles, confirmed to the Canadian Press that he died of natural causes last Wednesday at home in Toronto.
“Soles was committed to the highest standards throughout his 70 year career,” his obituary reads. But “by nature he tended undeniably towards mirth. ‘He who laughs, lasts’ was an oft repeated aphorism. He delighted in cracking people up on air and off and was a terrific joke-teller, an impressive mimic, accent man, public speaker, story-reader, announcer, host, emcee, compare.”
In addition to his work on Spider-Man, which ran for three seasons from 1967 to 1970, Soles won a 2017 Canadian Screen Award for best actor in the digital series for his role in My 90-Year Old Roommate.
As well as hosting the late-night talk show Canada After Dark for CBC, Soles also voiced animated characters in Rocket Robin Hood, King of the Beasts, The Marvel Super Heroes and The King Kong Show.
“Paul Soles was truly a Canadian treasure,” his manager Angela Wright wrote in a Facebook post. “He lived a long life with so many adventures along the way. RIP.”
