When it comes to Christmas movies, some prefer them more naughty than nice.
Acording to a new study by Preply, an online language-learning platform, Canada’s favourite profane Christmas movie from all 13 provinces/territories is National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, which took the top spot overall.

Other Canadian holiday favourites with hefty swearing are Bad Santa, Love Actually (with 36 instances of profanity) and Die Hard popular in Newfoundland and Labrador, Northwest Territories, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and Yukon.
The “no/low profanity” favourites are The Polar Express, Klaus, Elf and It’s a Wonderful Life in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.
Preply took a look at holiday films to lump them into major, mild or low profanity categories.
In the “major profanity” corner, Billy Bob Thornton’s Bad Santa took the lead with 255 instances of “strong language” with Die Hard behind it in second place with less than a third of the foul language infractions at 77.
Black Christmas, Krampus, Trading Places, Love Actually and Four Christmases all have between 30 to 40 uses of profanity, making them slightly edgier choices for the holiday season.
“Mild profanity” holiday movies like A Christmas Story has 11 uses and Home Alone has nine, while the “no/low profanity” category includes Elf and animated classics like The Grinch and The Polar Express all coming in at three or fewer instances of foul language.

To create a ranking of the most popular Christmas movies in each state/province/territory (the U.S. and Australia were also part of the study), Preply used Google search trends to determine the top search locations for major Christmas movies.
To determine the profanity level for each movie, movies were assigned low, mild or major profanity levels based on the number of swear words according to a script and IMDb analysis.
