Is Thor about to die? Chris Hemsworth posts possible 'Doomsday' spoiler

Chris Hemsworth’s emotional message about his 15-year journey as Thor has Marvel fans wondering if his superhero character is going to be killed off in Avengers: Doomsday.
Earlier this week, Hemsworth, 41, called his time playing the God of Thunder “one of the greatest honours of my life,” which some followers took as a thinly-veiled goodbye post.
“For the last 15 years I’ve held Mjolnir and then Stormbreaker as the God of Thunder, but what made it truly special… was sharing it with all of you,” Hemsworth wrote on YouTube as he shared a Legacy of Thor video. “Your passion, your cheers, and your love for this character have meant everything to me. Thank you for making my journey through the Marvel Cinematic Universe unforgettable.. Next up, Doomsday!”
Hemsworth’s name was one of the first revealed when Marvel announced the cast for next year’s Avengers: Doomsday, which is currently filming in England.
But his message — which came 14 years after his first outing as Thor — had a hint of finality that left some fans wondering if his hero will be killed off in Doomsday. After all, with the film having no less than 27 characters facing off against Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom — some of them aren’t making it out of that battle alive.
“I think Chris Hemsworth’s Thor is DYING in Avengers: Doomsday…,” one person guessed on X, with another sharing the actor’s statement and suggesting, “Thor might die in Avengers: Doomsday.”
“Thor is definitely dying in Doomsday. This reeks of (a) final goodbye,” a third wrote on YouTube.
Along with Mark Ruffalo, Hemsworth is the last OG Marvel hero, appearing in 10 MCU movies and four standalone entries.
But during an interview to promote 2022’s Thor: Love & Thunder, the Australian native said he was willing to stick around as the strongest Avenger as long as fans were interested.
“I love playing the character, and I have since the first day. As long as I get to keep working with wonderful directors and cast and crew and different writers and there’s an opportunity to do something different with the character, I’m down for anything,” he told Postmedia. “I’ll wait for the fans to say, ‘No thanks, we’ve had enough of you.’ But until then, I love it.”
Writer-director Taika Waititi echoed that sentiment, saying that Hemsworth could easily “do this for the rest of his life if he wants.”
Marvel announced a stacked roster for the upcoming superhero teamup in March, with Doomsday set to include more than 20 characters, including several key stars from Fox’s early-2000s X-Men films as well as Hemsworth; Anthony Mackie (Sam Wilson/Captain America); Sebastian Stan (Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier); Paul Rudd (Scott Lang/Ant-Man); Letitia Wright (Shuri); Winston Duke (M’Baku); Tom Hiddleston (Loki); Channing Tatum (Gambit) and actors from this summer’s Fantastic Four movie.
Other rumoured names expected to appear include Tom Holland (Spider-Man), Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool), Hugh Jackman (Wolverine) and Chris Evans (Captain America).
Doomsday, which opens Dec. 18, 2026, will be followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on Dec. 17, 2027.
During an appearance on an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast last summer, Downey said he was convinced to return to Marvel after getting a pitch from studio boss Kevin Feige.
“He said, ‘It just keeps occurring to me, if you were to come back …’” Downey said. “He brought up Victor von Doom. I looked into this character. Later on, he goes, ‘Let’s get Victor von Doom right.”
