Series creators, the Duffer brothers, released a From Russia With Love teaser Friday which revealed David Harbour‘s Chief Jim Hopper will be back when the show’s fourth season drops later this year on Netflix.
“We’re excited to officially confirm that production on Stranger Things 4 is now underway — and even more excited to announce the return of Hopper!” they said in a statement. “Although it’s not all good news for our “American”; he is imprisoned far from home in the snowy wasteland of Kamchatka, where he will face dangers both human…and other. Meanwhile, back in the states, a new horror is beginning to surface, something long buried, something that connects everything….”
Hopper seemingly died in a huge explosion at the conclusion of season 3.

“Season 4 is shaping up to be the biggest and most frightening season yet,” the Duffers added, “and we cannot wait for everyone to see more. In the meantime — pray for the American.”
In an interview with the Sun last year, Harbour called the Emmy-winning series a life-changer.
“That little show that we shot in Atlanta for very little money with no one paying attention or caring turned into this zeitgeist,” he said. “People finally discovered the Duffer brothers and these kids and me.”
At the end of season 3, Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder) takes her sons (played by Charlie Heaton and Noah Schnapp) and Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) out of Hawkins, Ind., in hopes of starting a new life. The scene then jumps to a Russian jail where guards are seen feeding a prisoner to a Demogorgon, but “not the American” (who was widely assumed to be Hopper).

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Ross Duffer promised the fourth season would “feel very different.”
“We’re pretty excited about where it’s potentially going to go,” he said. “Again, like we said, it’s going to feel very different than this season. But I think that’s the right thing to do and I think it’ll be exciting.”
Brother Matt added, ““I think the biggest thing that’s going to happen is it’s going to open up a little bit, not necessarily in terms of scale, in terms of special effects, but open up in terms of allowing plotlines into areas outside of Hawkins.”
Harbour reposted the trailer on his Instagram page with the caption, “For the faithful, Happy Valentine’s Day.”
