Amazon just introduced three new sizes of the Fire TV Omni QLED (Quantum Dot Display) Series and all of them have access to the evolving Ambient Experience — what Amazon calls the TV’s ‘always-on’ display capabilities. Amazon also launched the Fire TV 2-Series, which is a new device that focuses on affordability.

Fire TV Omni QLED TVs

For almost two years, Amazon has made its own TVs, for the ultimate Alexa integration. The Fire TV Omni QLED TV is Amazon’s leading device, previously available in 65” and 75”. For those in the Alexa ecosystem, an Omni QLED TV just makes sense. The Ambient Experience allows the TV to act as an Alexa hub, so you can control your smart home devices and see widgets like the weather, a calendar and the time.

The QLED TVs are compatible with Netflix, Paramount+, Prime Video and more. You can use the built-in microphones to control your TV with verbal cues. Other TV features include Adaptive Brightness, which automatically adjusts the brightness of what you’re watching according to the lighting in your room, and Bluetooth connectivity.

Fire TV 2-Series

Fire TV 2-Series devices offer many of the same features as QLED TVs, with a pared-down display. You can still access your favourite streaming services, use wireless Bluetooth devices and enjoy two HDMI ports. However, the 2-Series TVs do not support Ambient Experience. The 2-Series TVs are great for their compact sizing, accessible pricing and streaming capabilities.

Ambient Experience

Ambient Experience essentially turns your TV into a large tablet. It displays widgets (like Calendar, Sticky Notes, music and smart home favourites), the time and weather. In the Ambient mode, you can also control audio apps like Amazon Music, Spotify and more. The TV uses sensors to display the Ambient Experience when there’s someone in the room and goes back to standby mode two minutes after the room is unoccupied. If you don’t want to use Ambient Experience, you can always turn it off.

Ambient Experience also allows you to use your screen as an art display. You can either feature your own pictures or dip into the 1,700 gallery-quality pieces offered by Amazon. Later this year, Amazon will be introducing dynamic art experiences, where featured pieces will adapt to individual users’ environments. For now, there are still many wonderful displays to choose from including Vincent Van Gogh’s Wheat Field with Cypresses, Claude Monet’s and Auguste Renoir’s Lunch at the Restaurant Fournaise. Pieces by Canadian artist, Susan Doyle are also featured.

Daniel Rausch, Amazon’s VP of Entertainment Devices & Services, likes that “these art experiences are something my family can enjoy in passing, but are also an educational tool, teaching us about collections from around the world. If one of my kids is curious about learning more, they can ask Alexa for more information”

Rausch’s favourite features are “the Alexa Widgets, so in the morning when I get up, I’m able to glance at my Omni QLED and see my calendar and schedule for the day, browse the day’s top headlines, listen to some of my favourite news podcasts, and check the weather before I even leave the house.”
