Cozey Gaia sofa review: Spill, pet and kid-friendly

Fully removable and washable slipcovers

The Gaia sofa by Cozey has a clear differentiator: its slipcovers are removable.

I’ve reviewed quite a few of Cozey’s sofas, including the Altus, Ciello and Neptune — each with its unique set of qualities. The Altus is comfortable and the most affordable, the Ciello is larger and more cushiony and the Neptune is a sofa bed. The Gaia is an affordable option that could be good for a home with kids and/or pets.

Like all of Cozey’s sofas, you can select your preferred configuration. This time, I went with a four-seater and an ottoman.

My favourite aspects of the sofa are the beautiful sage colour I opted for, the ease of assembly and its modularity. My least favourite parts are jamming the pillows into the slipcovers (though I got the hang of it after a few pillows) and how the pillows sit on the sofa.

In general, I love Cozey. They offer great products for various spaces and needs, and it’s a Canadian company. I don’t have pets or kids, and for myself, prefer the even more affordable Atlus or more luxurious Ciello.

Cozey Gaia sofa review

I get the goal of the Gaia, a modern-looking, durable, adaptable sofa that can fit in many spaces and take on harsh wear and tear. It checks all these boxes. However, it’s not the most plush experience. Another one of my favourite features of the sofa is its frame-sitting-area-ratio; you get a lot of bang for your buck with the size of the sofa, as the frame is quite thin, increasing the actual sitting area.

Cozey delivery

Cozey continues to deliver on delivery. The sofa arrived a week after I ordered it. The mover was friendly and helped bring the boxes right into my unit. The shipment came in 10 large boxes, but they weren’t that heavy.

Assembling the Gaia sofa

As mentioned, I ordered a four-seater sofa and an ottoman, so I had a good amount of couch to assemble. From start to finish, the entire process took about two and a half to three hours (solo), including breaking down and recycling the boxes. Assembling the base of the sofa is simple; it’s a task that takes physical exertion, but it’s not difficult. It was also easy to put the slipcovers on the sofa, but challenging to get the pillows in theirs. I kind of got the hang of it after a few pillows. The key is to fold the pillow to slide it into the slipcover, and then maneuver it into position to fluff it up. It’s still quite laborious to get the pillows into the slipcovers.

Favourite features: Style, removable slipcovers, size

Style: I like how this sofa looks; large, modern and luxurious. I appreciate how the sofa is predominantly pillows with thin arms that don’t take up a lot of space. The sage green colour is deep and sophisticated with a velour-esque finish. The sofa looks inviting, as it’s a simple base topped with pillows.

Removable slipcovers: This is a wonderful feature. You can take the slipcovers off for laundering (like with this Canadian-made detergent) or to change them to a different colour. The slipcovers are durable and are ready to take on furry pets and sticky children.

Size: The Gaia has a unique approach. The frame has narrow backrests and arms, leaving lots of room for pillows. This maximizes the sitting space of the couch while maintaining an overall condo-friendly size footprint. I like this approach as it makes the sofa seem more grand without taking up more space.

Least favourite features: Pillows, firmness

Pillows: I didn’t like shoving the pillows in the slipcovers, and I’m also not a huge fan of how the pillows sit on the sofa. I find that the pillows move as I reposition myself. The pillows are also a bit stiffer than I’d like, though I appreciate that the intention might be balancing support and comfort.

Firmness: The firmness is still a comment on the pillows. The Gaia looks like a big, comfy couch that I’d want to jump onto and cozy up on, but the pillows are more on the firmer side.

Cozey Gaia recommendation

This could be a great sofa for a playroom or a high-traffic area that may not have the most gentle inhabitants because of its removable and washable slipcovers and durability. Due to its slim-frame design, the Gaia could be a good solution if you have a smaller space but still want lots of sitting room. However, if you’re looking for a plush sofa, you may want to consider another style (I’d recommend the Ciello). The Gaia comes in three beautiful neutral colours and my favourite, a bold and warm green, so it can complement many interior designs or be the focal point.
