Who do we thank for this day? None other than John Montagu, the fourth Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English noble whose birthday is Nov. 3. Word is old Montagu wanted something to indulge in with one hand — while he enjoyed a 24-hour gambling marathon. His loyal kitchen staff hustled and created a meat-filled sandwich — and voila! We’re now celebrating the birth of the first-ever sandwich.
What’s Canada’s favourite sandwich? A new survey commissioned by Chef’s Plate has revealed Canadians yearn for simpler things, including their sandwich choices. Topping the list? Chicken sandwiches, followed by grilled cheese, both coming out on top.
Canadian classics like the grilled beef sandwich with mustard on a kaiser roll, from the Montreal-based Wilensky restaurant — otherwise known as the Wilensky’s Special — and the Halifax Donair are not the top choices this year, although one classic that still remains relevant is the Montreal Smoked Meat (also known as brisket with mustard).

“It is interesting to see Canadians opting for simple, crowd-pleasing options for their sandwiches,” according to a recent media release from Chef’s Plate. “Plus, chicken and cheese don’t have to be boring — there are lots of ways people can flavour their favourite sandwich fillings and add complementary ingredients to spice up their sandwiches!”
