Bad news, everyone. Toronto is not the coolest city in Canada.
But take solace in the fact that it might be the most vegan- and vegetarian-friendly place for diners.
That is what the folks at Betway discovered when they did a deep dive into the hippest places to live in North America, with Boston taking top spot overall, and Vancouver proving to have the most rizz north of the border.
Despite boasting the most upcoming live music events, tattoo parlours and vegan/vegetarian/gluten-free restaurant options overall, Toronto slid to seventh in terms of overall coolness in Canada behind Vancouver, Victoria, Montreal, Edmonton, Calgary and Ottawa.
The reason? Ontario’s capital did not measure up as well in those categories when Betway broke the numbers down on a per capita basis.
The city, however, serves up some of the best vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free dining across Canada, which Betway determined using data from TripAdvisor. That should not be a surprise with Toronto currently under the fine-dining microscope thanks to the hit TV series Top Chef.

Toronto’s 1,221 vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free restaurants worked out to 47 per 100,000 people, which means it offers “both variety and accessibility for those seeking plant-based or allergen-friendly meals,” Betway said.
Plus, Mississauga (ninth, 241 restaurants), Hamilton (10th, 238) and Brampton (15th, 86) are all nearby, having ranked in the top 15 in Canada as well in the specialty dining category.
Rounding out the top three Canadian cities with the best vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free restaurants were Montreal (790 restaurants, 49.4 per 100,000 people) and Vancouver (644, 107.3 per 100,000 people.)
Vancouver, meanwhile, was named Canada’s coolest city “not just because of its chilly climate,” Betway said, but because of “effortlessly blending urban energy with breathtaking natural surroundings.
“Known for its progressive, multicultural vibe, the city offers something for everyone,” Betway said.
