Residential real estate can certainly bring out heated emotions. After all, it is only a huge purchase and just about anything can go wrong for new home buyers, right?
One moment you think you are on the right track, the next you learn about potential risks or issues, especially with re-sale properties. Follow these tips when communicating with your realtor and pretty much anyone in business:
1. Ask questions and remain clear. Know your goals and what you want. Know your budget and don’t be swayed to veer too high above that number. Most importantly, have a list of questions ready on paper so you stay on track. Speak out if your Realtor is bombarding you with too much information at once. Move at your own reasonable pace.

2. Listen and observe. The biggest indicator of trust is follow-through. Pay attention to what your realtor says and does. Do they align? Is your realtor patient or agitated when you are seeking more information? Remain calm and in control. Learn as much as you can about various properties and neighborhoods. You can always get a second opinion on what you hear if your intuition says so.
3. Follow up. Be the one to take initiative when it comes to the sale. Do your homework and again, ask any last-minute questions. See if everything you learn about the property aligns with your goals / checklist.
Not everyone is out to sell you what you don’t want to buy. There are some fantastic real estate agents out there. Before even speaking or seeking anyone, know your goals, write them down and do your homework.
This way you can communicate clearly what it is that you want. Otherwise, things could get lost in translation.
