Consider household gifts that everyone can enjoy using when together
My holiday gift giving habits have traditionally concentrated on each family member or friend and finding them something I hope they will enjoy using (I’m a bit of a practical gift-giver).

This year I’m switching things up a little bit. I am buying family and “group” (can’t forget the roommate households) gifts that everyone can enjoy using when together.
With less than a month left before the big day, I’ve got my orders in and covering off gifts for cooking, game nights, activities and more -I’ve covered off a wide list of fun gifts for the those who enjoy spending time together at home.
Of course my friends and family that live alone will still receive a thoughtful gift- any of these would do nicely too! Hope this offers up some inspiration to help you find the perfect gifts for others.
The family that dances. There can be nothing more fun than family or roommate date night at home throughout the winter. To help get your groove on, I found the new 2023 Just Dance music video game, $80 ubisoft.com.
It coordinates with the Nintendo switch system, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series XS. The game offers online multiplayer’s allowing up to five different people to join in around the world. Imagine… A world date night dance! This means even Santa can join your dance night from the north pole.
The family that hikes. For those who enjoy hiking or getting together for winter walks, the the Rambler Lowball insulated cup, $25, yeti.ca is the perfect way to sip on a hot toddy, tea or coffee and stay warm while outside.
Hosting an outdoor S’more‘s winter patio party? These cups are the perfect replacement for the crystal lowballs and serve up your libations in practical style.
The family that plays. There can be nothing more Canadian than the sport of hockey. But for those of us who don’t fare well on skates, an air hockey table is the next best thing.
The retro return of Hockey Night In Canada Premium Air Hockey Table, $250, walmart.ca, will have household members and visitors of all ages competing for your own Stanley cup!
The family that celebrates. One of the most important ceremonies during Hanukkah is the lighting of the candles. Modern versions of the menorah have been emerging over the past years and the trend of stone and marble has not been forgotten.
Cruising value-retailer Homesense uncovered beautiful Hanukah candle holders for under $30 and the white marble version stood out as something that could be re-configured and used throughout the year. Now that’s a gift that shines bright all year long.
The family that cooks. For many families, an extravagant gift is connecting through cooking and eating. The Thermomix countertop appliance has been described as ‘the worlds strongest blender’ but offers so many more features.
It replaces 15 to 20 countertop appliances by steaming, sautéing, chopping, Blending, and so much more! This 50+ year old iconic appliance has only been available in white.
This year, following the trends of ‘black is back’ for the kitchen, the Thermomix has been introduced for a limited-edition in “noir” – that’s the colour black for my non-European friends.
To think it can make risotto in one pot, no stirring and precisely instructs how much of each ingredient to add to the pot? Dear Santa: forgo the next 15 years of countertop appliances gifts and drop one of these sous chefs down the chimney, please…
The family that grows. The cutest, greenest and sweetest gifts I found was the General Supply Goods + Co Grow Your Own Christmas Tree Kit, $9.98, staples.ca.
It’s the gift that keeps on growing and in time (it takes 15 years to grow a 7 foot Christmas tree) a live Christmas tree can be celebrated. Gee, I wonder what the tree decorating trends will be in 15 years? PS, kids love this… There’s not a lot you can grow in the winter in Canada. Save Christmas, plant a tree.
