Last year, Pinterest brought us ‘kitschens’ and predicted Gen X and Boomers would ‘quirk up’ their cooking areas with thrifted finds, vintage appliances and eye-jarring pops of colour as terms like ‘eccentric kitchen’ trended upwards.
This year, it predicts people are leaning toward bold forms of expression and maximalism. Enter home trends like Terra Futura, Primary Play and Mix & Maximalist. It says its annual trends report has proven over the last five years to be 80 per cent accurate, so you may want to pay attention.

So just what does Terra Futura look like? According to Pinterest Predicts, Pinterest’s future-looking report, Boomers and Gen X are “rebels with a cause, revolutionizing sustainable living with recyclable fashion, self-sufficient gardens and other eco-living aesthetics.” They’re searching in large numbers for terms like ‘solar punk house’ and ‘chaos gardening.’
With Primary Play, “the inner child in everybody will escape to colourful new places in 2025.” Its report suggests Gen Z and Gen X plan to paint funky murals onto furniture, jazz up their rooms with contrast trim, convert drab cupboards with primary colouring and transform grown-up spaces into “playful little havens.” The proof is in the pudding, with searches for terms like ‘contrast trim,’ ‘cupboard painting,’ ‘door murals’ ‘hand-painted furniture’ and ‘hand-painted wall pattern’ all ramping up.
The Mix & Maximalist trend, meanwhile, suggests more is more in home décor in 2025, with Gen X and Boomers mixing and matching “brilliantly bold patterns, eclectic prints and delightful textures in all colours of the rainbow.” And there will also be “lots” of layering, it adds. Terms like ‘eclectic apartment,’ ‘vintage maximalism,’ ‘eclectic maximalism,’ ‘fabric wall décor’ and ‘eclectic boho bedroom’ are on Pinterest users’ radars.
Castlecore is a trend that spans categories. Gen Z and millennials are giving medieval a “major moment,” Pinterest tells us, finding home décor inspiration from ancient castles and rooting their fashion and accessories in gothic times. Pinterest users are searching heavily for terms like ‘castle house plans’ and ‘medievalcore.’
Like to entertain? Pinterest is also predicting Surreal Soirees will trend, complete with curvy candlesticks, fantastical flowers and gravity-defying centrepieces. “In 2025, people will infuse their tablescapes and décor with modern surrealism. Gen X and Boomers are driving this out-of-this-world party trend,” it says. Searches for ‘modern surrealism,’ ‘dinner party tablescapes,’ ‘strawberry centrepiece ideas,’ ‘Salvador Dali aesthetic’ and ‘cake bouquet flowers’ are all trending upwards.
How does Pinterest come up with its annual trends? For starters, it explains, more than half a billion people visit Pinterest each month, giving it unique insight into the next big things. By analyzing year-over-year growth in search terms, Pinterest
identifies the fast-rising patterns and curates findings into the report. While 65 per cent of the 2025 trends are driven by Gen Z, the trends span generations, it adds.
