1. Pay attention to how much time they spend getting to know you. Sales agents who take their time to get to know what it is that you want and need are doing their job. In order to really grasp this, they need to ask ongoing questions and take the time to know and understand what is best for you. It is not an overnight process. Just as you need your questions answered, pay attention to how many questions are being asked of you.
2. Ask for references. Cultivating a trusted business relationship takes time. There is no shame in asking for a few references. Dig deeper into their previous experience with Bob or Sally. See how your agent responds when requesting past clients to speak with. Do they seem put off, upset or even arrogant? First reactions cannot be masked. Due your due diligence. The right person will not hesitate.

3. Get a second or even third opinion. Take notice of being swayed into signing an exclusive agreement too soon. While every agent wants the security of knowing who they are working with since they are on pure commission, and all the energy involved in searching for the right property, this is something you need to come to when you are ready. This is a decision that should be mutual and derived at the right time.
Comfort level is everything when it comes down to it. Trust your gut. It never lies. It has no agenda.
