Adherents are quick to point our that polyamory is not new age swinging nor is it the same as an open relationship. Polyamorous relationships are more emotional relationships with others and not just based on sex.
According to researchers at Chapman University and the University of Indiana Bloomington, the survey found the concept is not out of the mainstream.
The study revealed that nearly 20% of respondents said they would be interested in a polyamorous relationship.
But the researchers also discovered that monogamy is the most prized type of romantic relationship, even as polyamory’s popularity soars.
The 2008 comedy Vick Cristina Barcelona with Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Scarlett Johansson tackled polyamory.
The results were published in Frontiers in Psychology and surveyed 3,438 single Americans on their thoughts and experiences with polyamory.

Around 11% of the survey sample said they had been involved in a polyamorous relationship. About 17% said they desired a similar relationship.
The survey said about 30% who had been in that type of situation would do so again.
However, about 33% said they couldn’t handle the emotional minefield of multiple partners.
Around 20% who had been in a polyamorous union in the past said they were too jealous to do it again.
The survey also found that of those willing to jump into a poly relationship, they were more likely to be male, young, vote Democrat and be “non-heterosexual.” About 14% said they have no desire for a polyamorous relationship.
“These studies suggest that a relationship with one partner tends to function independently of a relationship with another partner as both relationships were considered fulfilling, satisfying and secure (essentially without influencing each other),” the researchers said.
In the future, researchers hope to determine why some thrive in a poly relationship while others don’t.
