Hamilton cops seek clues in downtown homicide

A 33-year-old Hamilton man was reportedly involved in an altercation at a homeless encampment behind City Hall before collapsing to his death on a street in that city’s downtown core Wednesday, Hamilton Police said.

Cops held a news conference on Wednesday afternoon following the overnight fatality that is being investigated as a homicide. Police said they are looking for clues, including witnesses and any potential video footage.

On Wednesday, at about 3 a.m., Hamilton Police responded to reports of a man bleeding and unconscious in the area of MacNab St., near Jackson St.

Emergency personnel arrived on scene and administered first aid. The victim was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries and he was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy is currently underway.

Police said during Wednesday’s news conference that video evidence suggests “the victim ran away and collapsed in front of the YWCA” after an altercation at the encampment.

Detectives have reviewed surveillance from buildings in the area that capture both the back of City Hall and the area surrounding the YWCA.

Investigators are requesting that any residences or businesses in the area with surveillance cameras to review their camera footage between 2 a.m. and 3 a.m.
