A 31-year-old Hamilton man has been charged in a babysitting scam that targeted victims in the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
Toronto Police said that, between October 2024 and this month, a man was allegedly hired for various babysitting jobs using the name “Ashley Turnbull.”
Police said the man sent cheques to the victims with a request to deposit them into their accounts and then transfer the money from the cheque back to him. The man allegedly told victims the cash would be used for supplies and materials needed to babysit.
When the cheques were deposited into the victims’ accounts and transferred, often days later, they learned the cheques were fraudulent, said police, who added the victims’ money was never recovered.
Toronto Police’s 32 Division fraud unit investigated and learned that there were allegedly additional victims across Canada.
Kim Manget is charged with seven counts each of fraud under $5,000, possession of property obtained by crime and causing another person to act on a forged document, as well as laundering proceeds of crime.
