Nearly four out of 10 people — 38% — in Ontario know someone who has had their vehicle stolen during the last five years, according to a new survey.

That’s a 4% increase since 2023, says LowestRates.ca., an insurance rate comparison website.

Some Ontario motorists are looking to protect their vehicles, with a survey finding 16% say they only park in secure locations, and 6% indicating they have adopted anti-theft technologies like GPS tracking.

“When it comes to auto theft, prevention is key,” said insurance broker Steven Harris, of LowestRates.ca. “Investing in anti-theft measures not only protects your vehicle but also provides valuable peace of mind. It’s a proactive step that can save you from a lot of potential headaches down the road.”

Insurance rates for models which are most commonly targeted by carjackers can vary, depending on where a driver lives, said Harris.

“Living in a high-theft area that is near the 401 in the Greater Toronto Area may lead to higher premiums compared to someone who lives up north in Ontario,” he added.

Research shows thieves target areas near highways so they have access to escape routes, increasing the risk in those locations.

The survey found 31% of respondents were unsure if their model was one of those preferred by thieves, and that 12% said they installed anti-theft devices, after receiving recommendations from their insurer.
Conducted Oct. 5-6, 816 people were surveyed. No margin of error was provided for the survey.
