In 2022, organized auto theft rates began to increase in the region, police said.

“Peel Regional Police and the Peel Police Service Board were among the first to react by holding the first ever auto theft summit at the start of 2023,” Peel cops said in a news release issued on Wednesday.

Peel Regional Police also made significant investments in its Commercial Auto Crime Bureau, doubling in size and becoming one of the largest in the country.

As a result, there were more than $380 million in recoveries since January 2023, which equates to over 7,400 vehicles recovered, more than 1,100 auto theft-related charges laid against 543 individuals since January 2023, a 16% decrease in auto thefts in 2024 compared to 2023, and a 45% reduction in auto thefts compared to the same period last year, which represents a $60-million reduction.

“We have made significant steps in addressing the ongoing threat of organized auto theft in our communities, including the expansion of our Commercial Auto Crime Bureau, one of the largest of its kind in Canada,” Peel Regional Police Chief Nishan Duraiappah said.

“These combined efforts have led to more arrests, charges, and recoveries than ever before. While there is still more work to be done, we remain committed the fight against auto theft.”
