An eight-year-old boy was struck and killed by a stray bullet while he was sleeping in his bed in a North York apartment.
The alarming details were revealed by Toronto Police on Saturday morning following the chilling overnight crime at an apartment building at Martha Eaton Way and Trethewey Dr. near Black Creek Dr. in the city’s north end.
Police responded to the area around 12:27 a.m.
Paramedics said they arrived on scene to find a child who had been shot. The boy was transported in critical condition to a local pediatric hospital.
The boy was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.
No suspect descriptions have been released.
“It’s an unimaginably tragic event that has occurred here,” Det. Sgt. Jason Davis told reporters while providing an update from the scene on Saturday morning.
“What’s happened here is a cowardly, disgusting act of violence, and every resource available in the city is being allocated to this right now.”
Additionally, police said two other units in the apartment building were struck by gunfire but there were no additional reports of injuries.
The boy lived in the building, Davis said.
An investigation is ongoing.
