Witnesses sought after bystander helps foil attempted Vaughan carjacking

York Regional Police are looking for witnesses after a civilian intervened in an attempted carjacking in Vaughan.

On Thursday at 7 p.m., police received a call of an attempted carjacking in the area of Major Mackenzie Dr. and Weston Rd.

The victim was in the passenger side of a vehicle when the suspect opened the driver-side door. The suspect told the victim that he had a gun and told her to get out of the vehicle.

A civilian intervened, causing the suspect to exit the vehicle. The suspect produced a firearm, but fled on foot.

There were no reported injuries.

The suspect is a 5-foot-6 Black male between 18 and 19 years old with a medium build. He was wearing a grey hooded sweater, black track pants and a blue surgical mask.
