1 dead in Scarborough house fire, another critical after Toronto blaze

One male is dead following a house fire overnight in Scarborough while an elderly woman was critically hurt in a separate blaze in Toronto.

Toronto Police said on social media site X that officers were called to Birchmount Rd. and Hwy. 401 at 2:39 a.m. for a “large house fire.”

Police said a man was pulled from the fire by Toronto Fire crews and that two people – a male and a female – were transported to hospital.

A male was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The cause of the fire, which has been extinguished, is not yet known.

In a separate incident on Christmas Eve, police said officers were called at 10:35 p.m. to reports of a large fire coming from an apartment in the Yonge St. And Davisville Ave. area.

Police said a female victim in her 80s was taken to hospital via emergency run with life-threatening injuries.

The building was partially evacuated.
