The driver of a Mississauga Transit bus suffered major injuries, while 10 passengers and a motorist were also hurt in a collision on Hwy. 27 on Tuesday.
Sgt. Murray Campbell, of Toronto Police Traffic Services, said that shortly after 11 a.m., a MiWay (Mississauga Transit) bus and a silver Toyota RAV4 collided on Hwy. 27, just south of Dixon Rd.
“You know that collisions shouldn’t happen at any time. And if we can have a collision of this magnitude with that many people involved and have relatively minor injuries for passengers, then that is a good day all things considered,” he said. “It could have been much worse.”
Ten of the 13 passengers on the bus were sent to hospital with minor injuries. The driver, who sustained more serious injuries, was rushed to a trauma hospital.
The driver of the RAV4, with Illinois licence plates, escaped the collision with minor injuries. The vehicle ended up smashed into a ditch more than 100 metres north of the bus.

Campbell said it appears from initial investigation, that the bus was travelling southbound on Hwy. 27.
“It crossed into oncoming lanes, which were the northbound lanes,” he explained. “It appears at this time that it is the movements of the bus that we are focusing on at this point.”
Orange pylons dotted the highway, showing the path of the bus followed along the highway’s southbound lanes. The bus crashed into a ditch before smashing through a fence at the Richview hydro transformer station.

Andy Saunders, who works at QPS Evaluation Services — a nearby electrical company — said he was walking through the parking lot at his office when he heard the crash and ran to assist those in the bus.
“I helped the people get off the bus, because I wasn’t sure if there was anything there that could blow up (after the crash),“ said Saunders.

Passengers were screaming, mostly in shock from the crash, added Saunders, who said when he approached passengers, “I told them to take it easy,” and asked if anybody needed help.
He went to the assistance of the bus driver “because he had a big cut over his face” and used paper towels to compress his wounds.
“Some people went through the (smashed out) side windows, the side doors,” said Saunders. “I tried to get them all off the highway. In case something else happened.”
“I’m glad something like a transport truck wasn’t coming up the other way. “Because if ( the bus) was crossing the lane, there would have been no stopping it,” he added. “It could have been a lot worse.”
A statement from the City of Mississauga said that Mississauga Transit was aware of the situation and “MiWay is closely monitoring the situation and our thoughts are with those impacted.”
