Caught in summer job limbo? CNE still needs plenty of workers

The Canadian National Exhibition has started the annual process of filling all of the jobs needed at the Ex and more than 37,000 people have registered to work at Canada’s largest fair so far.

The number of applications is a record, according to officials, and candidates can still apply online on the CNE website as there are positions yet to be filled.

Candidates of all abilities are encouraged to apply for various seasonal positions.

The CNE is one of the country’s largest employers of youth with more than 80% of its staff being between the ages of 14 and 29.

As the CNE gets ready for opening day on Aug. 16, some of the positions that need to be filled include gate attendants, info guides, midway staff, food handlers and cashiers.

    CNE attracts highest attendance in 25 years

The CNE said that youth unemployment in Canada between the ages of 15 and 24 rose to a record high of 12.8% from April 2023 to April of this year, marking the highest rate since 2016,

The CNE generates an economic impact of about $112 million for the GTA and $143 million for the province each year. In 2023, the CNE reached an attendance record of more than 1.6 million visitors.

The CNE said 83% of its staff identified as being a youth between the ages of 14 and 29, that 78% of its staff identified as a visible minority and 15% of its staff identified as having a disability in 2023.
