Cops say that after detecting a strong odour of fresh burnt cannabis within the vehicle, officers conducted a search of it and the occupants.

Police allegedly seized 33 grams of cannabis — not in its original packaging — and 250 grams of suspected fentanyl.

One Sig Sauer P320 9mm handgun with an extended magazine and 16 rounds of ammunition were also seized.

Police say the firearm was concealed and unholstered in the waistband of one of the occupants of the vehicle, had no manual safety, and had nothing physically preventing the firearm from being unintentionally discharged.

The first accused boy faces one drug-related charge and seven firearm-related charges. The second boy faces one drug-related and one firearm-related charge.

“This incident serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers faced by first responders on a daily basis,” Anishinabek Deputy Chief Julie Craddock said.

“I’m grateful that both suspects were taken into custody without harm to public safety.”
