CRIME BRIEFS: Murder charge laid in Richmond Hill, tow truck driver busted for speeding

A man arrested in the death of a woman in Richmond Hill is now charged with murder.

On Saturday at 8:25 a.m., York Regional Police were called to a residence in the area of Gracedale Dr. and Shaftsbury Ave. for a welfare check. Officers located 60-year-old Xioamei Wang dead in the home.

Following a search, a suspect was arrested in Toronto later that day.

Henry Al, 23, of Richmond Hill is charged with second degree murder.

Police say there are no other suspects and the investigation is ongoing. They are looking for any video surveillance footage from the area between Sept. 20 at 5 p.m. and Sept. 21 at 9 a.m.

SPEEDING TOW TRUCK BUSTED

On Monday night, Peel Regional Police say they stopped a tow truck driver travelling 106 km/h in a 60km/h zone near Torbram Rd. and Queen St. in Brampton.

The driver was hit with a 14-day vehicle seizure and a 30-day licence suspension. 

Their name was not released.

MAN CHARGED IN DEATH OF FEMALE CYCLIST

A 28-year-old Toronto man faces charges in the death of a female cyclist last month in the city’s west end.

On Aug. 24 around 8:20 p.m., a 26-year-old woman was riding her bike westbound on Burnhamthorpe Rd. just east of the Kipling Ave. intersection as the man, driving a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta, was also westbound on Burnhamthorpe.

Toronto Police say the Jetta struck the cyclist and she was taken to hospital in serious condition.

On Aug. 31, the young woman died from her injuries. Her name was not released.

On Tuesday, Andreas Erodotou surrendered to police and was charged with dangerous operation of a conveyance cause death and careless driving cause death.

COPPER THEFTS IN CALEDON ON RISE

Caledon OPP are reporting a spike in copper thefts.

Police are investigating six separate copper thefts that happened in August.

Telephone wires are being targeting in rural area in the middle of the night. The wires are cut from poles, stashed at the side of road and recovered at a later date.

CLARINGTON GAS STATION ROBBED

Durham Regional Police are looking for a suspect after a knife-wielding man allegedly robbed a Clarington gas station.

On Sept. 15 at 10:10 p.m., police were called to an armed robbery at an Esso station at 1451 Regional Hwy. 2. A man allegedly entered the gas station with a knife and demanded cash from an employee.

The suspect fled when other customers entered. The victim wasn’t injured.

The suspect is a 5-foot-10 white male, 20 to 25 years of age, with blond hair and an average build. He was wearing a dark-coloured face mask, a black shirt, black pants and black shoes.

MAN CHARGED, ANOTHER WANTED IN GRANDPARENT SCAM PROBE

York Regional Police have charged a Brampton man in a grandparent scam investigation and are looking to identify a second suspect.

Police started an investigation in July after the victim received calls from a person acting as a police officer, who allegedly told the victim their grandson was arrested on drug charges and needed bail money.

The victim agreed to pay $6,000 and a courier was sent to pick up the money.

Police said the suspect allegedly called back the same day and told the victim a gun was also found in the vehicle and another $7,000 was needed, at which point the victim called police.

Markell London, 20, of Brampton, is charged with fraud over $5,000.

Police said the second suspect is a 5-foot-9 Black man, 20 to 25 years of age, with black hair.

TORONTO MAN CHARGED AFTER DRUG BUST

A 31-year-old Toronto man is facing numerous charges after police seized a large quantity of drugs and guns in a trafficking investigation.

Toronto Police said they executed a search warrant after learning that a Toronto man had allegedly been trafficking in powder and crack cocaine.

Police seized two semi-automatic handguns, an overcapacity magazine with 15 rounds of ammunition, more than 200 rounds of various ammunition, a laser sight for a handgun, a holster, digital scales, cellphones, more than 1.7 kg of cocaine, at least 65 g of crack-cocaine and currency.

Shaquille Evering-Kerr was arrested on Sunday and charged with trafficking in a schedule I substance, possession of a schedule I substance for trafficking, possession of a firearm without holding a licence, possession of a firearm with an altered serial number, storing ammunition carelessly and other offences.
