CRIME SCENE: Assault against Richmond Hill transit driver hate-motivated, cops say

Police are probing an alleged assault against a public transit driver in Richmond Hill as being motivated by hate.
York Regional Police said the victim was operating a bus in the Bathurst St.-King Rd. area around 9 p.m. on May 31 when cops allege the suspect made an anti-Black comment and then assaulted the victim by spitting in their face.
The suspect is described as a male, about 5-foot-10 and 160 pounds with a thin build. He has black curly hair, brown eyes and a full beard and was wearing a black jacket, dark green shirt, grey sweat pants and white shoes.

3 TEENS CHARGED IN SMASH-AND-GRAB JEWELRY THEFTS
Three teen males have been charged following a series of violent smash-and-grab jewelry store robberies.
Peel Regional Police said that between Jan. 19 and Feb. 4, several suspects committed three robberies targeting jewelry stores in shopping malls in Peel Region.
Two of the robberies happened in Mississauga and another happened in Brampton.
Police said in each instance the suspect rushed into the jewelry store armed with hammers and pry bars. Once inside the store, the suspects allegedly began smashing glass display cases and removing merchandise “with no regard for the safety of customers or employees.”
Police said the suspects fled the mall using a stolen car as their getaway vehicle.
All three suspects were found and the suspect vehicle was also recovered.
A 16-year-old from Toronto is charged with robbery and wearing a disguise with intent, while a 17-year-old from Nova Scotia is charged with two counts each of robbery, wearing a disguise with intent and failure to comply with a release order. A 16-year-old from Kitchener is charged with three counts each of robbery, wearing a disguise with intent, failure to comply with undertaking and failure to comply with sentence of disposition, as well as possession of property obtained by crime.
Two of the accused were on court-ordered release forms in relation to previous various violent offences.
The accused can’t be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

CAREGIVER ACCUSED OF ASSAULTING RESIDENT IN GEORGINA
A caregiver has been charged with sexual assault at a long-term care home in Georgina.
York Regional Police said investigators with the Special Victims Unit laid charges against a care support assistant after officers responded on June 19 to a report of a sexual assault involving a female resident at the facility.
Police said that due to her medical condition, the victim was unable to provide a statement. However, through investigation, a staff member was identified as the suspect.
Jefferson Daye, 57, of Georgina, was charged. He had been employed at the home for about one year and had regular access to residents.
Police have also learned that the accused may be affiliated with various church communities in the Georgina and East Gwillimbury areas, where he may have presented himself as a pastor.
“Given his access to vulnerable individuals in both caregiving and religious roles, investigators are concerned that there may be other victims who have not yet come forward,” police said in a news release.

TORONTO MAN CHARGED IN SUSPECTED HATE CRIME
A 57-year-old Toronto man has been charged following a suspected hate-motivated assault.
Toronto Police said officers responded on Wednesday to an incident in the Armoury St.-University Ave. area where it’s alleged the accused tried to spit on the victim and repeatedly shouted racial slurs at the victim.
Ali Bani Jammat is charged with assault and breach of a probation order.

MAN TASERED WHILE APPROACHING COPS WITH KNIFE
Cops used a Taser to subdue a 35-year-old Toronto man accused of walking towards police officers while holding a knife during a retail robbery.
Toronto Police said officers responded to a hold-up call on Wednesday at about 12:15 p.m. in the Eglinton Ave. W.-Dufferin St. area.
It’s alleged that a lone male suspect entered a store carrying a large knife and wearing a mask to disguise his identity.
Cops said he took a replica Glock 17 BB handgun off the shelf and exited the store, then immediately re-entered the store and took a quantity of BBs and several BB gun magazines before fleeing on foot.
Officers from 13 Division located a suspect, who allegedly approached them with a knife, prompting their deployment of their Conductive Energy Weapon.
The officers were able to safely take the suspect into custody. The knife and stolen property, meanwhile, were recovered.
Jamiel Omare Murray is charged with robbery with offensive weapon, wearing a disguise with intent, and assaulting a peace officer with weapon.

MAN, 70, ACCUSED OF SEX ASSAULT AGAINST GIRL
A 70-year-old man is accused of sexually assaulting a child in Mississauga.
Peel Regional Police allege that on June 21 in the Bromsgrove and Southdown Rds. area of Mississauga the accused approached a girl, sexually assaulted her and took intimate images of her.
On June 22, Donald Leveque was arrested and charged with sexual assault, sexual interference, invitation to sexual touching, and making and possessing child pornography.
Levesque is known to have ties to Toronto, Mississauga, Hamilton and St Catharines, and investigators are concerned about the possibility of other alleged victims.

CELLPHONE THEFT ON RISE: TORONTO COPS
Toronto Police are reminding people to be mindful of their cellphones as cops have received increased reports of cellphone thefts where crowds have gathered for public festivals.
Police said that in May and June they received increased reports of such thefts. They said suspects have been stealing cellphones from bags, backpacks, pockets, purses, and those left momentarily unattended. In some cases, the suspects removed phones from zipped-closed purses and bag pockets.
