CRIME SCENE: Cops allege link between rideshare sex assaults in Brampton, Vaughan

A sex assault in Vaughan may have been committed by the same man who, after identifying himself as a rideshare driver, attacked a second woman in Brampton, according to Peel Regional Police.
An 18-year-old woman was sexually assaulted after accepting a drive from an attacker who identified himself as a rideshare driver on Nov. 8, around 8 a.m., said police.

The woman was at a bus stop at Goreridge Cres. and Via Romano Way in northern Brampton when the motorist offered the woman a ride in exchange for cash.
Authorities alleged the driver took the woman to Clareville Conservation on Hwy. 50 and Gore Rd. where he allegedly sexually assaulted the victim.
The suspect is described as a South Asian, 20-25 years old, with black hair, a beard, and an average build. He wore a blue or black winter jacket and black pants and drove a black, four-door Hyundai Elantra.
Police said officers believe the same suspect sexually assaulted a woman in Vaughan.
Charges laid in fatal accident
A 42-year-old Kitchener woman faces charges after a crash in Markham claimed the life of a 68-year-old man.
York Regional Police said that officers responded to the crash in the Hwy. 7-Reesor Rd. area during the early evening on Nov. 11, after an SUV allegedly crossed the centre lane, hitting an oncoming hatchback.
The driver of the hatchback was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in that vehicle was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries.
Carolyn Nielsen faces charges, including impaired operation of a vehicle causing death.

Hamilton Police chief offers condolences
Hamilton Police Chief Frank Bergen offered condolences to the family of Erixon Kabera, a 43-year-old father of three, who was fatally shot by one of his officers on Sunday.
“This investigation is ongoing, and there are limited facts I can share at this time, as the SIU is the agency investigating. Once SIU invokes its mandate, information is released to the public by the SIU,” Bergen said in a statement Wednesday.
Bergen added police responded after receiving a call from a person living in a building who indicated there was a man armed with a handgun at their door.
He also said while Hamilton Police released a statement on social media on the night of the event, “at no time did Hamilton Police release any information related to an exchange of gunfire,” nor did they “identify the person officers had an interaction with.”
