CRIME SCENE: Cops probing fake active shooter call in Courtice

Durham Regional Police said a false report of an active shooter at a Courtice high school is being investigated after it led to a “substantial” response from officers.

Police responded to a report of a shooter at Courtice Secondary School on Thursday at about 11:35 a.m. after receiving a call from a third-party agency citing someone who contacted them about witnessing the incident.

The school was put on lockdown after officers arrived, but police determined there was no shooter.

Halton cops warn of jewelry thefts

Halton Regional Police are warning the public of distraction-style jewelry thefts across the region.

Police said the latest incident happened on Tuesday at about 2:30 p.m. in the Lakeshore Rd. and Nelson St. area of Oakville, where the victim — an elderly woman — was walking before being approached by a lone female.

The suspect showed the victim fake gold jewelry — including a large ring, bracelet and chain — and tried to hug the victim before placing the chain around her neck and walked away. The victim later realized her necklace was taken, police said.

Police said the suspect is a female with a heavy build and between 20 and 30 years old.

Similar incidents were also reported in Burlington last month and outside of a Food Basics in Georgetown on Saturday, police said. In each case, the victim had their jewelry taken while a stranger tried to give them fake gold jewelry.

“While the style of theft is similar, the suspects are not the same for all three of these occurrences,” Halton police said.

Pedestrian struck, killed on DVP exit ramp

Police are appealing for information after a pedestrian was struck and killed on a Don Valley Parkway ramp.

Toronto Police said they responded to reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a vehicle on Thursday at about 11:10 a.m. on the southbound DVP at the Richmond St. exit ramp.

They said a 48-year-old man driving a brown 2021 Toyota Tundra was approaching the ramp before they struck a male pedestrian. The driver stopped his vehicle nearby and remained at the scene.

Police believe other vehicles may have also struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene, but were unaware it was a person and continued driving.

Suspect sought after Ajax gas station robbed

Police are on the hunt for a male suspect accused of making threats and stealing cash from an Ajax gas station.

Durham Regional Police said officers responded to a robbery call on Thursday at about 1:40 a.m. at the Esso station at 211 Bayly St. E., where a male threatened an employee and took cash from the register before fleeing.

The victim was not physically harmed.

Police said they are looking for a white male who was wearing a dark jacket and dark pants at the time.
