A man and his three-year-old daughter were hit by a car and killed while crossing a busy Pickering road Tuesday night – moments after the father seemingly drove off from the scene of a nearby collision.
Durham Regional Police say the initial crash occurred in a rural area at Brock and Taunton Rds. around 7:50 p.m.
A 39-year-old woman was driving south on Brock through the intersection “on a green light” when her Nissan was struck by an oncoming Honda that was turning left to head west on Taunton, acting Staff-Sgt. Joanne Bortoluss said in a statement Wednesday.
She said the Honda, driven by a Pickering man, travelled west for about 350 metres before leaving the roadway, hitting a guardrail and coming to rest in a ditch.
“The 40-year-old male exited his vehicle and removed his three-year-old daughter from the Honda,” Bortoluss explained.
“The male walked back up onto the roadway carrying his daughter and attempted to cross Taunton Rd. heading south where they were struck by a westbound BMW operated by a 52-year-old male from Ajax.”
The man was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, while his daughter was rushed to a Toronto trauma centre.
“On arrival at the hospital, the female was treated for her injuries, however, she passed away a short time later,” Bortoluss said.
The crash area was shut down to traffic for several hours while police gathered evidence.
“This collision is still under investigation,” Bortoluss said.
The names of the father and his daughter were not immediately released.

In an update later on Wednesday, police said it was too soon to know if the man was fleeing the scene or heading back to the initial collision site when he was hit by the BMW with his child in his arms.
“Unfortunately, we cannot confirm what the male’s intentions were when he was walking along the roadway with the young female,” Const. Nicholas Gluckstein told the Toronto Sun.
