In the summer of 2015, after a raccoon was found dead on the side of the road in the Yonge St. and Davenport Rd. area, passersby took pity on the animal and created an impromptu memorial. A hashtag was created — #deadraccoonto — and the tribute became a meme on the Internet, encouraging people to stop by and pay their last respects.

“Everyone leave your green bin lids open tonight in memorandum,” said another.
Toronto Animal Services said they received a call to pick up a raccoon cadaver from that location on Wednesday.
“The call came in at 9:21 a.m. and the cadaver was picked up at 2:05 p.m., within the 48 hour response period,” said a spokesman from TAS. “We are not aware of another racoon cadaver at the corner of Dundas and Bathurst. We encourage residents to call 311 to submit service requests for the pick-up of dead animals (cadavers).”
