Family 'devastated' after search continues for man who fell off jet ski in Lake Ontario

The Toronto Police Marine Unit and the Canadian Coast Guard were continuing to look on Monday for a man in his 20s in Lake Ontario east of Bluffer’s Park in Scarborough after he fell off his jet ski Sunday night at around 9:15 p.m.
Cops say the man was not wearing a life jacket when he went into the water, but his female passenger was, and she was able to be rescued with the help of another jet ski operator.

Apparently, neither the man nor the woman on the jet ski who ended up in the lake were strong swimmers, according to information received by police.
“We just met with the family,” Duty Insp. Lhawang Jongdong told reporters on Monday morning.
“Obviously, at this moment, the family is fairly devastated right now but they are obviously optimistic and hopeful that we will find him soon. This search has been going on since 9:15 p.m. (Sunday) night, so it would be hard to fathom finding any person alive at this point right now. In terms of the conditions, it was fairly nice weather (Sunday) night. It was unfortunate that it just happened in the very late night. Our focus right now is on recovering him.”
Jongdong said the woman suffered no obvious physical injuries, “but I’m sure she’ll be dealing with (the situation) emotionally. That I can’t imagine.”
He also couldn’t say the relationship between the man and the woman on the jet ski.
Search efforts, with the help of Toronto Fire, continued until 4:30 a.m. before resuming again Monday at 7:30 a.m.
“Members of the (Toronto) Marine Unit, along with the Canadian Coast Guar,d continue to search for this individual,” said Jongdong.
“We’re asking anyone who witnessed this incident or who may have information to please contact police. We want to remind everyone to always check weather conditions before going out in the water and please wear a life jacket and please ensure you have the required safety equipment with you in case of an emergency.”
Jongdong said the jet ski was rented, but couldn’t say from where.
