A 11-year-old boy from Hamilton, Ont. received 17 stitches after he was bit by a shark off the Florida coast, according to Broward Health Medical Center.

Christian Mariani was swimming Wednesday morning at Fort Lauderdale beach when he suddenly felt something grab his right foot.

“It almost felt like human teeth, and then I ran out screaming,” Mariani told NBC News.

“It was pretty painful, like really painful.”

The bite was treated by Dr. Francis Amador, who determined that Mariani thankfully wasn’t hurt too bad.

“I guess the shark wasn’t that hungry, just looking for a snack,” said Amador.

Officials believe the bite came from a small shark, based on the puncture wounds.

The hospital took to Twitter to share Mariani’s recovery update, along with a photo of the boy holding a stuffed shark.

“‘My friend, here, was very lucky,'” Amador said.

“That is the scariest feeling that I think I have ever experienced in my life,” said Mariani.

But the shark tale won’t stop him from going back to the water, who said he’ll swim again after his leg heals.

“I feel more lucky than unlucky,” he said.

“I know that it’s a very low chance to get bit by a shark but to be in the condition I am right now, that is also very lucky.”

On the bright side, he’ll have a great story to tell his class once school starts.
