FOREVER FRIEND: Cookie the cat 'playful spirit' waiting to shine in new home
Female domestic short-hair has had hard life, needs patient owner, calm environment

Cookie the cat can be your forever pet as the four-year-old domestic short-haired female awaits adoption at the Toronto Humane Society.
THS spokesperson Lucas Solowey said Cookie was originally a stray, but had been in a home until she was surrendered to the shelter in June.
“I did see a note that when she got stressed out she would have some accidents outside of the litter box and that was happening a little too much, I think,” he said.
Solowey said that Cookie’s life has been hard and warming up to new humans might take a while.
“Basically, Cookie’s journey wasn’t an easy one,” said Solowey.
“She was rescued from the streets. This pretty girl learned to enjoy the company of humans in her previous home. She isn’t the cuddly type just yet, right now. Basically, she’s not too sure about a lot of petting or snuggling, but we’re working to get her use to gentle touch and de-sensitization and counter-conditioning to help her feel more comfortable with touch.”

Solowey says Cookie can get stressed due to change, so things like “stability, patience and just giving her space to feel at home” are key.
“We believe with a stable, calm home and a patient adopter who understands her needs, Cookie will feel safe and secure again,” said Solowey.
“Currently, the shelter is quite overwhelming for Cookie and she’s quite scared and withdrawn, but those who have known her say underneath the worry is a playful spirit just waiting for the right moment to shine. So she is currently in a foster home just to get a little bit more socialized, a little bit more comfortable in a more calm environment than the shelter, but we are looking to her next full-time home. She will make a sweet cat. She just needs time to settle into a new space.”

Ideally, Solowey said, there wouldn’t be other pets in the home that Cookie is going to and smaller kids are fine “as long as they’re gentle and not too loud.
“A quiet home and someone who has patience to spend time with her and help her build trust,” would be a good fit, Solowey said.
