FOREVER FRIEND: 'Sweet and lovable' Nyla seeks stable home with backyard

Nyla, a two-year-old Canary Island dog-mix, has waited for her Forever Home since being dropped off at the Toronto Humane Society by her guardian in June “due to personal circumstances.”

“She’s generally well-behaved, good natured, but she has had some fear, anxiety and stress in the past so that has been reduced with training as well as some medication,” said THS spokesperson Lucas Solowey.

“But the ideal home would be a stable home with a backyard for her to run and play in. There could potentially be other animals, but I think it would be best for her to start off being the only dog (in the home) and then potentially introduce other animals in the future. But I think she’d just want to feel stable in her environment. So I think it’d be best just to have adults and older children.”

Nyla is currently on two short-term habituation medications — gabapentin and trazadone — to help with her anxiety. The person who adopts her will receive a two-seek supply of the medication which is administered twice daily and can be mixed into cheese whiz, peanut butter, or wet dog food.

Solowey says once Nyla adjusts to her new home, she may no longer require them.

Otherwise, Solowey says, Nyla is “sweet and quite lovable. She’s quite gentle. She enjoys spending time with her human friends,” he said.

“She enjoys quiet time at home as well as quiet nature walks where she can walk and sometimes chase a bird. She is working on training so she’s getting better at checking in with her handler for treats and praise, but she can still be quite playful and training is a work in progress.”

That being said, Solowey thinks she’s worth the effort.

“She does require a bit of patience, a bit more effort, but she’s on track to being the best dog out there,” he said.
