Girl, 6, drowns in Oshawa pool amid big party

Summer is off to a tragic start with two separate drownings on Saturday.

Dead are a six-year-old girl in a Oshawa and a 22-year-old Brampton man.

Durham Regional Police said that on Saturday night around 7 p.m., officers were called to a large bash at a home near Birchview Dr. and Ormond Dr. in Oshawa.

When cops arrived they were told that the little girl was missing.

Officers began searching the property and found the child in the pool.

One of the cops dove into the water and retrieved the child.

Officers performed CPR until Durham Paramedics Services arrived.

The victim was rushed to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police are now investigating the tragedy and are encouraging families to exercise extreme care when dealing with water safety during the summer months.

Meanwhile, a Brampton man is dead after he drowned off Wasaga Beach on Saturday afternoon.

Huronia West OPP said they were called to Wasaga Beach around 5:30 p.m. after a man vanished in the water.

He had drifted several hundred metres on a “flotation toy” and could not be seen by friends on the beach.

OPP officers and volunteers searched for about two hours before a police helicopter spotted his body near where he disappeared. The 22-year-old Brampton man was pronounced dead in hospital.

Cops said the victim — whose name was not released pending notification of next of kin — was a “very weak swimmer” and not wearing a life jacket.
