York Regional Police say the force has seen an encouraging decline in several major crime categories during the first half of this year.
As of June 25, homicides are down 67% — three this year, compared to nine during the same time period in 2024.
Motor vehicle thefts dropped by 37%, with 1,722 in 2025, compared to 1,080 incidents during the same time period last year. Car-jackings also decreased — by 49% — from 41 to 21 incidents.
“We know how important it is for residents to feel safe in their homes, on the roads, and in their communities,” said York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween in a statement.
“These positive trends are the result of tireless efforts from our officers, strategic partnerships with other police services, and support from our community. But we know there is always more work to do.”
The force also noted drops in break-ins (11%), and hate crimes (25%).
Police attributed the decline in auto thefts and carjackings to York Regional Police’s targeted enforcement efforts and regional task force initiatives.
