Latest nightmare rental is $500 ‘jail cell’ in Scarborough

With the cost of living so high nowadays, that leaves little-to-no budget for having a life outside a home — if you’re fortunate to have a roof over your head.

That said, there are many landlords taking advantage of that hopelessness and in these desperate times, people will take what they can get.

Case in point — a Facebook Marketplace ad boasting about a one bed, one bath house for $500 a month.

Sounds decent, until potential renters realize it’s literally one bed as the ad reads, not an actual bedroom, in the dingiest of basements.

“The slumlords in Canada are getting quite out of pocket,” one content creator posted about the Scarborough listing.

“You get a bedroom in a cold cellar/jail cell but hey, at least it comes fully furnished with a bed, nightstand and lamp,” he said sarcastically.

“You also get this lovely window to bring you lots of natural light.”

There’s also a grey shag rug included in the deal, as the three sad photos show.

Pics of the listing were also shared on Reddit’s “Slumlords Canada” page, and people had lots to say.

“You’d have a higher quality of life in a supermax prison than whatever this is,” one person wrote.

Another chimed in, “Worse than a prison cell. At least they would have a sense of heating and could get out in a fire.”

A third person countered, “We need better standards than ‘better than a prison.’”

One user commented that they sympathized with international students, while another asked why are they coming to Canada in the first place.

One student responded, “Coming as an international student, I can relate to this. Worst decision I’ve ever took (sic), all you see from the outside is the safe cities, friendly people and ‘first world’ culture,” they said of their dream.

“Long story short, rent is abnormally high, food is a luxury, insurance is a ripoff. Can’t wait to be gone from this country, but it’s so hard to save money.”

But someone pointed out, “Sad thing is someone will rent it.”
